12/10/2023 0 Comments Rimworld game genreTheir escape plan nearly fails, as the group steals an empire-owned vessel and is pursued through the seas, later finding themselves shipwrecked in an uncharted island. In TAR, you command a group of civilians that ran away from a planet-spanning empire that is very keen on "correcting" those who oppose their views. We're also adding an in-map element of mystery exploration and expansion, by allowing to dig down and mine/build below. Once the expected systems of a colony-sim are in place, we also intend to add on a story component (that is already mostly written), making the story optional, for the most part, for the pure sandboxers out there. I'd really like to go for some XCOM-level of strategic/overworld play on this genre, too, but we're taking care about the scope (given our budget of below zero). Our main goal is to make a colony-sim in as grand of a scale as it's still fun, manageable and performant, enabling hundreds of pawns to be on-screen doing their pawn things, while hopefully making threats large and varied. This is a lesson we took from similar projects and it seemed fitting for this one, although it can feel a bit unnerving. We've released the game in 'earliest access' on Itch.io in order to gauge interest and gather feedback very early on. There's also a few other inspirations, but they probably don't make it to the screen at this current development stage. Sometimes I'd try to throw them in your faces by bumping one of our threads or making a new one. For many years I enjoyed wasting investing hours online rummaging through the internet to find obscure or lesser-known projects (mostly in the DF Genre or close to it in some way). Or how about the time, when boomalopes, a species of exploding animals, decided to attack my colony and my automated defense system opened fire on them? In a few seconds, half of my colony exploded and everything was on fire.Maybe you've seen one of my posts around here. Having no way to control your bedridden colonists, there’s nothing you can do but watch when your doctor goes insane and chooses to burn everyone along with himself. I can’t even describe how it feels to see how all of your colonists are bedridden aside from the doctor who also happens to be a pyromaniac. I have witnessed the destruction of either my own or my friend’s colonies numerous times. But as the players of Dwarf Fortress, which is another game in the same genre, sometimes say: losing is fun. The consequences of player’s actions’ combined with all these random events can lead to an easy victory. By having an effective strategy for micro-managing the colonists, the player can also have a great influence on the colony’s future, which makes the game not that unfair even in higher difficulties. Different traits combined with a narrative created by random events ensures that every playthrough will be unique. For example, a colonist might have a trait like being abrasive, which negatively affects the social interactions with other colonists. Every colonist has their own background and different traits that affect their performance. In the game, the colonists differ greatly from each other. The events can hit the player’s colony extremely hard straight from the start, or not. The third one, Randy Random, which always happens be my choice, offers a truly randomized narrative. The second one, Phoebe Chillax, gives lots of time between events, which could be a good choice for players that want to concentrate on colony management. The first one, Cassandra Classic, offers an increasing curve of challenge, giving the player quite a balanced game experience. There are three AI types, called the narrators, that control the flow of random events. While building the infrastructure and managing resources are a big part of the game, the narrative elements formed by varying random events make the game a masterpiece in its genre. The player can attain the needed resources by various means: gathering them from the environment, raiding enemy colonies, or trading with allies are the most common ways to keep resource intake at the required level. While building the infrastructure of their colony, the player also has to deal with random events, such as enemy raids, famine, heat waves, or contagious diseases, just to name a few. In Rimworld, the player manages a colony of people with the goal of escaping the planet by researching and ultimately manufacturing the required space travel technology. Released in 2018 by Ludeon Studios, RimWorld is a single-player construction and management simulation game.
